Kite Clash 2018

Kite Clash 2018

In just a few short days, some of the world’s best kite boarders will sail into Squamish, B.C. to compete in Canada’s largest kiteboarding competition. Located about an hour outside of Vancouver, at the infamous Squamish Spit, the events will run from July 6th through July 8th and feature competitions in free style and big air, as well as the kiter cross.

This year’s contest will feature 70 of the best kite boarders from Canada, Dominican Republic, South Africa, England and Spain.

The event this year will start on Friday July 6th beginning with the 6th Annual Canadian Freestyle Championships at 11am where competitors are judged on things like what tricks are being performed while the rider is airborne. There will be winners crowned from 4 categories – Mens, Womens, Masters (competitors over 35) and Juniors (competitors under 18). The Twin Tip Slalom Cross will also be held on Friday with and Open Mens and Open Womens categories. The Slalom Cross will start at 3pm and will judge competitors on speed and board and kite control.

Saturday the 7th will be the day for the thrilling Open Freestyle competition which is open to Men, Women and Juniors and should start at 11:30am. During this event, riders are encouraged to go all out – think expression session in the sky.

Sunday the 8th is the last day of the event and will focus on the Big Airstlye Competition as well as the finals for the Slalom Cross. The Big Air contest will start around 11:30am and is separated into Mens, Womens and Juniors and the Slalom Finals will start about 3pm.

Event times can vary on wind and weather conditions.

The 2018 Kite Clash is free for the public to come and watch. The exciting event takes place in the beautiful Squamish Spit. The Spit is a world-class spot for kiteboarding. The Squamish Spit is ideal because it is located where the Howe Sound and the Squamish river connect, making it the first piece of land that winds hit, making it the perfect place for kite and wind surfers.

This year’s event is expecting over 1000 spectators and to make things easier and safer, the event is providing parking and free shuttle service to and from the contest. Everyone who wants to participate or spectate is encouraged to park at Backcountry Brewing on Commercial Way. On Friday and Sunday, the shuttle will run to and from the venue every 30 minutes. On Saturday, the shuttle will run ever 60 minutes. There will also be a separate shuttle running between 10am and 7pm along Spit road every 15 minutes for people who parked along the dirt road before the yellow gate.

There is food and beverage (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) available for purchase during the event but remember to keep the area clean.
