Squamish Rock Climbing

Those who have done any Squamish rock climbing know that The Stawamus Chief is world famous for multi-pitch granite climbing. You may also be aware that surrounding the Chief are many smaller cliffs that offer many excellent single-pitch climbs.

The rock climbing season in Squamish is generally from early spring to late fall. Often beginning in February or March with sunny cragging conditions, the weather is changeable and frequent rainfall is not uncommon which makes multi-pitch climbing difficult at best. Ideal Squamish rock climbing takes place from June through August, the driest season on the coast, and the daytime temperature is often in the upper twenties. This is the best weather for ascents of the longer walls on the Chief, since there are long periods of clear and warm weather. September is a wonderful bonus month for rock climbing in Squamish, often allowing perfect fall conditions. It does rain more often as we get farther into fall. So you can see that rock climbing in Squamish has a good long season until the cold winter rains arrive, usually in late October, but sometimes early November. While that is the end of the “consistent” climbing, the winter months do offer climbable weather, but it is necessary to be flexible if the bad weather hits.
